Wayne Rooney will not be leaving
Manchester United, says manager
David Moyes.
The Scot held his first press
conference since officially taking
over from Sir Alex Ferguson, and
was quick to bat away questions
about the future of one of his star
men.
In only his fourth question, the
former Everton boss said: 'I've
spoken to Wayne Rooney. Wayne is
not for sale - he is a Manchester
United player - he will remain a
Manchester United player.
Welcome on board: David Moyes
has held his first press
conference as Manchester
United manager
'I have had several meetings. He
has come back in good shape and
is excellent in the training sessions.
'We are trying everything we can to
get Wayne Rooney in a condition
and state when he is more like the
Wayne Rooney we know.'
Away from Rooney's future, the
Scot refused to be drawn on any
other targets, including Cristiano
Ronaldo.
Moyes said: 'I will never speak
about players at other football
clubs. This club is always interested
in the best players.'
Among the other topics up for
discussion was the rivalry he's set
to enjoy with Jose Mourinho and
Manuel Pelligrini, both of whom
are also undertaking new jobs.
Tiring: The Rooney saga looks to
have come to an end after
Moyes said the striker was not
for sale
Speculation: Rumours
surrounding Rooney's future had
been rife but Moyes has kept the
calm
Moyes said: 'I am really pleased to
see Jose back. Everyone will enjoy
having him back in the Premier
League.
'I have come across Pellegrini a
couple of times - it will be new to
him as well. There will be a lot of
things unknown and it is exciting.'
Reflecting on the length of the
contract he has been given, Moyes
said: 'I have found the people at
the club fantastic.
'They want continuity and longevity
- Glazers and Ed Woodward see it
as a long-term thing. I need to say
a big thank you to Bill Kenwright
and Everton. I'm sure he
understands I had to make this
move.'
